Environmental protection is vital for a sustainable future, and conserving water bodies plays a crucial role in preserving natural resources and ensuring water security. GV conducted a Total Sanitation Campaign, constructing 23,000 individual and community toilets to promote hygiene and improve public health. Additionally, afforestation programs have contributed to ecosystem restoration, enhanced biodiversity, and climate change mitigation.
District-wide anti-plastic campaigns have been launched to reduce pollution and encourage eco-friendly alternatives, with strong cooperation from the district government and panchayat members. Effective solid and liquid waste management practices have been implemented to maintain cleanliness and prevent environmental hazards.
To further these efforts, GV collaborated with NABARD, CARE INDIA, and other agencies, mobilizing human resources to conduct workshops on various environmental issues and raise awareness within communities.
Conservation of Water bodies: Water bodies in Kanyakumari district are vital for drinking water, agriculture, and biodiversity. Rapid urbanization and pollution are threatening these essential resources. Since its inception, GV’s one of the major goals is conserving them which is crucial to ensure water security, sustain livelihoods, and protect the region's ecological balance.
Total Sanitation Campaign (GV has Constructed 23,000 Individual and Community toilets): GV was awarded as Best NGO for successfully carrying out the Total Sanitation Campaign in the district.
Afforestation Programs: Afforestation is essential in Kanyakumari district to restore degraded land and prevent soil erosion. GV has been involved in increasing the green cover that helps combat climate change and supports local wildlife habitats. A strong afforestation program through planting of trees through SHG women in many villages ensures environmental sustainability and improves the quality of life for future generations.
Campaign against Plastics: A campaign against plastics in the name of “Kuppai illa Kumari” movement was initiated by GV few years back in Kanyakumari district is crucial to protect our land, water bodies, and marine life from pollution. Single-use plastics harm the environment and pose health risks to humans and animals. Promoting eco-friendly alternatives and public awareness can lead to a cleaner, greener future.
Solid Waste Management: GV have successfully installed effective solid waste management through pipe compost method in certain pockets of Kanyakumari district which is vital to maintain public health and environmental cleanliness. GV believes in promoting segregation, recycling, and responsible disposal ensures a healthier and more sustainable community.
Pipe composting is an environmentally friendly way to manage organic waste at the household or community level, reducing waste sent to landfills and producing compost that can be used for gardening or landscaping.
It is a method of composting organic waste using a vertical or horizontal pipe structure. It involves placing biodegradable waste such as kitchen scraps, garden clippings, and other organic matter inside a perforated pipe that allows air to circulate. This process facilitates aerobic decomposition, transforming the waste into nutrient-rich compost over time.
Permanent Housing Solutions: Through RGRP housing solutions scheme, around 3500 permanent houses were built to ensure safety, dignity, and stability for vulnerable families. Temporary shelters are often unsafe and lack basic amenities. Investing in durable, disaster-resilient homes improves living conditions and supports long-term community development.
Liquid Waste Management: Proper liquid waste management through Leach pits in every household is crucial to prevent water pollution and protect public health. Untreated wastewater contaminates water bodies and affects agriculture and marine life. GV has implemented a safe disposal and treatment system to ensure a cleaner environment and sustainable water use. Leech pits are simple, unlined pits used to manage and treat liquid waste, particularly in rural sanitation systems. They are commonly part of household or community-level waste water management solution. The primary function of leech pits is to allow liquid waste to percolate into the surrounding soil while retaining solid waste for decomposition. We create awareness among people to construct leech pits in their houses to prevent them from letting waste water into the storm water drains which eventually enter into water bodies creating water pollution.
Permeability: The pit is designed to allow liquids to seep into the soil through its porous sides and bottom.
Conduct workshops on various environmental issues: Good Vision conducts workshops on various environmental issues to raise awareness and inspire action among communities and students. These sessions cover topics like waste management, water conservation, afforestation, and plastic pollution. Through interactive learning, we aim to build a more eco-conscious and responsible society.
