English for Economic Opportunities

GVST’s “English for Economic Opportunities” initiative is a transformative project aimed at empowering Government School students from classes 3 to 8 across Tamil Nadu with essential English language and other communication and leadership skills. By providing learning materials and teaching by volunteer teachers, this project ensures equitable access to quality education, regardless of socio-economic background. Significantly, this innovative approach is aimed at improving students’ pronunciation, boosted their confidence, and opened doors to a brighter future. The project is implemented in 66 Govt. schools of Kanyakumari, 25 Govt. schools in Coimbatore, 5 Govt.Schools in Chennai with plans to expand to other schools as well. Targeting students from 3rd to 8th grade, this project aims to benefit over 12000 students. To facilitate effective learning, 84 dedicated volunteer teachers were recruited and trained periodically to provide English language and other communication skills in each school by using Vocabulary Drill method (repetitive learning method). The syllabus for the project is being drawn from the school curriculum (nearly 70 %) and from other topics such as Gender justice/equality, Environmental conservation, Nature-nurture, Constitution of India, Legal literacy, Law-abiding citizen, and Life skills, etc. (around 30%). The entire syllabus is taught in 3 Terms divided equally (same as school format). The syllabus is designed by a team of linguistic experts. A robust monitoring and evaluation (M&E) system is in place to track the project’s progress. Geo-tagging, Google Forms and Software are used to record daily attendance of volunteer teachers (which will be approved by the concerned school HM), while monthly reports provide a comprehensive overview of activities. Baseline, Midline, and Endline Tests will be conducted to assess students’ progress in six key areas: writing, reading, listening, speaking, comprehension, and confidence level. By empowering students with English language skills, GVST’s “English for Economic Opportunities” initiative is not only bridging the digital divide but also fostering a more equitable society.
