Early warning system
To create awareness on Early Warning System about disaster preparedness to coastal villages in Kanyakumari district, Good Vision had undertaken this project through UNDP. Through this project Good Vision capacitated the targeted 30 coastal villagers on disaster preparedness and formed Core Teams as Community Based Disaster Management Teams. All the 30 Selected villages were made available of the disaster management related information. Also UNDP with the Assistance of the Government of Tamilnadu has established Early Warning Systems ( wireless set ) in the 30 coastal villages and are functioning well.
Disaster Risk Management
Killiyoor block is one of the Tsunami affected blocks in Kanyakumari District. The community alone cannot manage catastrophic situations due to lack of systems, capacities and also lack of knowledge about disasters. There was no knowledge regarding types of disasters or the safeguarding measures especially when disasters strike. With the intention to strengthen systems and capacities of the community, Good Vision in partnership with CARE India carried out a Community Based Disaster Risk Management Programme in Killiyoor Block.
The completion of the project witnessed various changes in the community in terms of knowledge, skill and attitude regarding disasters. Now the community has learnt to save lives especially during disasters in both man-made and natural disasters. In all 50 villages, the youths including women were trained in disaster management and also task forces were formed to act during disasters. There is a village level disaster management committee which will coordinate the work during the emergencies. Thus people have taken responsibility themselves to face the challenges in case of any disaster. This has added strength to the community to save valuable life and assets. Community is also equipped with necessary instruments for safeguarding their life and property.
